It may be time for the city to consider a one-cent sales tax.

When presented with the annual decision to pass the ad valorem tax, Pea Ridge City Council members questioned the tax.

"How long have we had this?" councilman Bob Cottingham asked.

"This is my 40th year; at least that long," City Clerk Sandy Button said.

The current ad valorem tax rate is as high as it can go, 5 mills.

The city sales tax is 1 percent. The county sales tax is 1 percent. Cities in the area have higher sales tax rates, Button said. "Ours is the lowest sales tax. It has been for years. It might be time to think about that."

"It might be time to start thinking about it," Mayor Jackie Crabtree admitted.

Council members approved the resolution levying the Ad Valorem taxes for 2017.

In other business, council members:

• Appointed Peggy Maddox, B.J. Dye and Laura Baker to the Library Board;

• Heard an update on plans for the sewer treatment plant; and

• Approved an ordinance authorizing issuance and sale of water and sewer refunding revenue bonds.
