Nature lessons offered
Mother Nature herself has become a frequent visitor to Hobbs State Park Conservation Area. She visits the park every second Saturday of the month and reads nature stories to her little followers. Readings begin at 10:30 a.m.
Story time will be followed by "hands-on" nature-craft activities. Children of all ages are welcome, however most stories target children 3 to 6 years of age.

• Sept. 10: "Let's Be Nature Detectives"
• Oct. 8: "Three Cheers for Trees"
Meet Mother Nature in the lobby of the Hobbs State Park Conservation Area visitor center located on Ark. Hwy. 12 just east of the Ark. Hwy. 12/War Eagle Road intersection.
This free event will last approximately an hour.

Enjoy hiking in the woods even more using Ozark forest forensics
We go for a hike. We get our exercise, sunshine and fresh air, but we miss things if we don't take the time to look at our surroundings closely and with an investigating eye. Sooner or later most of us want to know a little more about the things that go on in the forest we are passing through.
Dr. Fred Paillet has co-authored a book with Steve Stephenson entitled "Ozark Forest Forensics -- The Science Behind the Scenery in Our regional Forest."
According to Paillet, "This little book is written to provide a handbook to guide you in a more systematic investigation of the things that go on in our Ozark woodlands. Our intent is to make an ordinary walk in the forest all the more interesting and stimulating to the average hiker as he learns to read the many stories of past events and fierce ongoing competitive struggles that are occurring all around."

Seven kayak workshop dates set
Have you ever wanted to learn to kayak? Here is your chance to learn from a kayak instructor for the American Canoe Association (ACA). Participants will learn all aspects of paddling while exploring a calm area of Beaver Lake. Recreational kayaks, paddles, and lifejackets will be provided.
Space is limited on each workshop, and open to 16 years and older. Bring a sack lunch, drinking water, sunscreen, and dress for the weather.
