Refinancing saves money

Refinancing a 2013 bond gave the Pea Ridge School District $10,417.85 in unrestricted funds. With the lower interest rate, the district will save $530,029.52 over the life of the bond, according to Scott Beardsley of Beardsley Public Finance. That is 10.842 percent less than payments would have been on the Nov. 1, 2013, issue of the $3 million bond.

"The school district was looking for the lowest rate of interest," Beardsley said.

Board members also adopted a proposed budget of expenditures with tax levy for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2017.

"This gives 60 days notice that you are not asking for a millage change," Beardsley said, when introducing the state-required motion.

After a brief executive session, School Board members:

• Hired Suzanne Murphy, High School science teacher; Dalton Palarino, PRHS teacher/assistant senior boys basketball coach and head junior boys basketball coach; Tiauna Young, PRHS business teacher; Ashta Snow, special education para-professional; Jordan Taylor, Kelli Toomer and Serena Cannon, Intermediate School teachers; and Ryan Toland, Special Education teacher;

• Transferred Billy Cotton from instructional aid to Primary School special education para-professional; Olivia Laine, Primary School special educaiton to Middle School special education; and Candra Troby from Intermediate School para-professional to Primary School special education;

• Accepted resignations from Denise Burnett, nurse; Joyce McClellan, teacher; Chip Greenwell, assistant principal PRHS; Megan Bryant, Middle School Para Pro; Casey Donson, teacher; and Jessica M. Fowler, Intermediate teacher; and

• Released two students -- Ty Seger Myers, 9, and Cole Franklin Myers, 6 -- from Pea Ridge to Rogers.
