Artsonia honors area students

Special to The TIMES

Eighty students of the Pea Ridge Primary and Intermediate Schools have qualified for Artsonia Hall of Fame status at the mid-term break.

The Pea Ridge school is in its eighth year of participating in the Artsonia online art gallery, which hosts 8,000 other schools in the United States as well as hundreds of other schools from around the world. The website was launched in 1999 and ranks as the largest online art gallery in the world with more than 37 million artworks on display. Nearly 5 million American students have art in the gallery.

In order to qualify for membership in the Arsonia Hall of Fame, each student's parent must first register on the website. After this, each student has to have on display at least five artworks, with at least five people signed on as fans, along with at least five posted comments on that students' art. There is no cost to participate.

The point of the Hall of Fame is to get parents more involved in their child's education. Students seeing their art on display encourages excellence, with positive comments posted by gallery visitors also serving to boosting positive attitudes. Friends and relatives who sign on as fans to the student artists receive copies of that students art via email every time a piece of art is posted.

As a further reward for membership in the Hall of Fame, older students qualify for Artsonia field trips. Fifth-grade students, for the past 10 years, have gone on a May field trip to Tulsa, touring the Gilcrease and Philbrook art museums among other venues. Other grades have gone on trips to Springdale, Fayetteville and Bentonville. Students have until April 1 to qualify for the April trips.
