Good books available to borrow

Library welcomes donations

Our good luck ran out and winter has found us. I was hoping for a bit more snow but I suspect that will come before winter is over. Maybe even this weekend. Plenty of time to stop by the library and pick up a couple of good books. I have been reading books by a couple of Amish writers lately and I have enjoyed them more than I thought I would. Since I didn't win the lottery so I could retire and travel around the world, I will be doing lots of reading.

I found a really neat web site that has an extensive listing of events around Arkansas -- www.arkansas.com/events. Among the listing are the following:

Library hours

1 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday

10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays

• An exhibition that explores the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, one of the worst man-made disasters in American history, runs through Feb. 26 at the Springdale Public Library.

• A wintering population of trumpeter swans descends on Magness Lake, located east of Heber Springs, each year. You can see these magnificent birds through the end of February.

• Celebrate the Wonders of Winter Wildlife at Hobbs State Park-Conservation area! Cure your cabin fever with this spectacular winter event. Activities and crafts for the whole family will be going on throughout the day! Eagle Watching cruises are scheduled each weekend in January and February at Rocky Branch Marina in Rogers.

• And don't forget Lawrence Plaza Ice Rink will be open through Jan. 18.

One of our patrons has just finished reading "Clan of the Cave Bear" by Jean Auel and has checked out the next book in the series. I have not read this book but have been told by a number of people that is excellent. I believe there are six books in this series and we have all of them.

To each of our patrons who comply with the library guidelines, I want to thank you and tell you how much we appreciate your cooperation. Replacing materials that are checked out and not returned takes a large bite out of our budget. Materials may be checked out for two weeks and can sometimes be renewed for an additional two weeks. We allow only one new release per person per check-out and we do not renew new releases. A copy of our policy is available at the library and is given to each new patron.

Stop by and pick up a few books before the next round of winter weather arrives.

See you at the library!
