Leaders of both the city and the school met Tuesday morning for the groundbreaking of the new City Hall and School Administration office building. Both entities met in a joint session Monday night to approve the "guaranteed maximum price" of $2,5551,608, as presented by project estimator Trent Rogers.

"I'm excited to talk about this new project. It's unique," Rick Neal, school superintendent, said. "This has been an outstanding team ... we have a unique relationship between the architect, construction management and school."

Rogers shared the 21 bid packages with deductive projects with city and school officials.

"As in any good marriage, there are questions," Neal said.

"Do we have a prenuptial?" Sandy Button asked. Button, a School Board member, is also the city clerk and sat at the city's table Monday night.

Duplicates of utilities increased the price, assistant superintendent Keith Martin explained. City and school costs will be separated in the final project.

City Council members Bob Cottingham, Ray Easley, Lance Sanders and Steve Guthrie unanimously approved accepting the bid. School Board members Sandy Button, Jenny Wood, John Dye, Jeff Neil and Ryan Heckman approved the bids for the school.

Construction is expected to be complete in August.
