Municipal seats up for election

Three positions are available in Pea Ridge and five each in Garfield and Gateway. Only one person has filed as of Tuesday morning.

Pea Ridge City Council members Bob Cottingham and Steve Guthrie both said they intend to file for re-election. The position of city clerk is held by Sandy Button. Pea Ridge is a first-class city; the positions are for four-year terms.

In Garfield, all four aldermen positions are open for election, as is the recorder/treasurer position (a four-year term). Garfield is a second-class city. Currently, Dale Watkins, Leonard Matthew Jr. and Katherine Shook hold seats. A seat vacated by Malania Carter was to be filled by appointment at a Garfield City Council meeting Tuesday, Aug. 9. The aldermen positions are for two-year terms.

In Gateway, a town, all five City Council positions are up for election. Only one candidate has filed -- Carol Pendergraft Frost, who filed Aug. 1. The positions are for two-year terms.

Friday, July 29, was the first day candidates were able to file for city races that will appear on the Nov. 8 general election ballot. The filing period ends at noon Aug. 19.
