Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

A Pea Ridge area woman, Mrs. Elaine Rogers of Garfield, and a Fayetteville and Springfield, Mo., businessman, Alex Montez, are being tried in Benton County Circuit Court on first degree murder charges. The case involves the shooting death on Sept. 5, 1974, of John David Walker, 31, of Rogers at the home of Mrs. Rogers near Coddling's Corner located five miles east of Pea Ridge near the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 62 and Ark. Hwy. 72.

The newest addition to the Pea Ridge High School campus is a Guidance and Counseling Department, housed in the mobile home beside the Home Ec building. Mrs. Roy Roe, who holds a masters degree in guidance, is the part-time counselor.

Another weather balloon was found here last week by Sam Scrugham and Everett Samuel on farm land leased by Samuel west of Pea Ridge.

Gateway Town Council at its Sept. 5 meeting granted a permit to William Trotter, Hilltop Club Inc., to operate a private club serving alcohol beverages, effective Sept. 3 to Dec. 31, 1985. The permit fee is $20 annually and the city will receive 6 percent of the club's gross receipts.

A bevy of country beauties is lined up for the first annual "Miss VAS" contest to be held Saturday, Sept. 14, at Garfield School. Most of the contestants will be recognized as local male volunteers. The Volunteer Ambulance Service of Northeast Benton County is staging the "beauty contest" as part of an afternoon of games, food, drawings and frivolity to help raise funds for the service, which was recently named an Emergency Medical Service District.

Mrs. Marcie Patton is the new special education teacher at Pea Ridge Elementary School. She is in her fifth year as a teacher. She taught two years in Broward County, Fla., and then two years in Houston, where her husband Greg was working for Sams.

After hearing elementary, middle and high school principals give projected student enrollment numbers for the 1996-97 school year on Monday night, the Pea Ridge School Board began brainstorming ways to meet classroom needs for next year. Board president Jerry Burton said, "You would think the 13 classrooms added one and a half years ago would've held us, but this is not going to be the case."

Pea Ridge has a new water superintendent who thinks treating city wastewater is easy. Before Ken Hayes came to Pea Ridge as the new water/sewer superintendent, he spent 15 years in the chemical industry. As quality control supervisor for chemical plants, Hayes said a large part of his job was treating wastewater from those plants. Hayes also supervises the city water department.

Pea Ridge Fire Department Substation No. 2 on Hickman Road was busy on Sunday with the dedication of the new flagpole and flag. The Woodmen of the World Insurance Society provided the pole and the flag for the station. Gary Nolte of the Woodmen made the presentation and dedication. The flag was raised by members of the fire and police departments.
