The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Pea Ridge's water supply got back to normal by noon Monday, Ron David of the city reports. The only time during the past week when the city was in real danger of running out was the first night, Aug. 27, he said. After that the residents cooperated very nicely and the city was able to supply minimum water needs until the break at the Beaver Water District plant was repaired.

"Motorists are urged to use caution when traveling on a highway that is undergoing this treatment because the gravel can cause glass breakage when it is kicked up by a vehicle that is traveling too fast for conditions." The warning was issued by the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department for travelers on Arkansas Highway 72 which was resurfaced last week, 15.28 miles of it, from Bentonville to the junction of U.S. 62.

The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

After a delay of nearly a month, a U.S. Postal Service official said that the new Pea Ridge and Garfield post offices will open next Monday. The new post offices contain 4,725 square feet. Each has 25 parking spaces.

Friends of Kendrick Fincher, the 13-year-old Rogers eighth-grader who collapsed from heat stroke after football practice on Aug. 7, have set up a memorial fund to help cover the costs the family incurred during his three weeks in the Arkansas Children's Hospital and to set up a memorial in Kendrick's honor in the area. The family hopes to build a baseball field in Kendrick's memory.

The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Local school districts are opening their arms to refugees coming into the area from the hurricane-torn south. Pea Ridge schools have already enrolled eight students. Six families from Mississippi and Louisiana are staying with two local families. The local Charity Golf Classic has donated $2,100 to the school to help the families.

John and Lee Ann Samons, formerly of Loranger, La., were thankful to be back in Benton County. The couple are staying with Lee Ann's parents, Ronald and Janice Bray of Pea Ridge, after fleeing Louisiana in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The couple left Pea Ridge a year ago for Loranger, a town about 60 miles north of New Orleans. They moved just as Hurricane Ivan hit. Following Hurricane Katrina, they are coming back to Benton County to stay.

Brenda Treadwell, a longtime member of the community, was sworn in as postmaster of the Avoca Post Office on Aug. 17.

Taking first place in the 12th annual Pea Ridge Charity Golf Classic was the team of Robbie Starner, Shannon McBee, Doug Cooley and Garry Quam. The estimated overall money raised by this year's Golf Classic was $12,000.
