New books in library

The City of Pea Ridge lost an icon last week with the passing of Fred McKinney. I did not know him well but admired him for all he did for this area. He was instrumental in starting a public library in Pea Ridge and served on the first Library Board of Trustees. Our deepest condolences to his family.

The following titles were donated to our library by the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies/CALS:

Library hours

"Central in Our Lives: Voices from Little Rock Central High School, 1957-59"

"A Little Rock Boyhood: Growing Up in the Great Depression"

"A Pryor Commitment: The Autobiogrphy of David Pryor"

"The Broken Vase: A novel based on the Life of Nina Krupitsky (resident of Little Rock), A Holocaust Survivor"

"Main Street Arkansas: Arkansas Cities and Towns As Seen in Postcards and Photographs"

"Open House: the Arkansas Governor's Mansion and Its Place in History"

I haven't had a chance to read any of these, but a quick look through them makes me want to peruse them all.

Right now I am reading a work of fiction by Jodi Picoult, "The Storyteller." In this searingly honest novel, the writer gracefully explores the lengths we will go in order to protect our families and to keep the past from dictating the future. This is only the second of the 21 books she has written that I have read. I will be happy to add your name to the reserve list for this 2013 publication.

There were certainly enough activities in the area over the weekend to keep everyone busy; not the least of which was Granny's Quilts of Love auction and dinner. They had a good turnout and lots of very nice auction items. These ladies have made and donated more than 20,000 quilts to Little Rock Children's Hospital. This dedicated and hardworking group of women deserve our respect and admiration.

If you hurry you can see some of their quilts on display in the library.

See you at the library!
