The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Avoca City Council members named a new alderman and new recorder-treasurer. Louis Behrenfeld began service as alderman and Diane Bowen was re-appointed recorder-treasurer. County Judge Al Norwood swore in both Behrenfeld and Bowen. Behrenfeld, the second mayor of Avoca, will complete the term of the late Ross Nichols.

With the rejection Oct. 22 of a compromise offered by the City of Little Flock to the City of Rogers over contested annexed areas, the issue will return to the courts. A number of efforts have been made to resolve the dispute over "buffer zones" and boundaries, each one fruitless. The matter will now require a court hearing.

The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Instead of blue and gray uniforms worn in the Civil War battle at Pea Ridge more than 140 years ago, volunteers Saturday were dressed in jeans, T-shirts and windbreakers. They were there to help restore the Wiley Foster Farm -- part of the battlefield -- by building split-rail fences and doing general upkeep. A few hundred volunteers of all ages participated. Funded by a $10,000 2005 Unilever Discretionary Grant, this was the second consecutive year that Pea Ridge National Military Park has received such a grant.

Washington Junior High School's theater seating capacity was no match for the hundreds of people who attended Wednesday night's Benton County Planning Board public hearing on the Grandview Heights on Beaver Lake high-rise condominium project. Benton County residents were eager to express their views on the proposed 25-story condo development on Beaver Lake.
