Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

The first deer of the season, taken northeast of Pea Ridge, was brought by the Graphic-Scene office Monday, an eight-pointer brought down with a 30-30 by Robin Ivy of Pea Ridge. By 5 p.m. Monday, game warden George Clark of Rogers reported that 35 deer had been checked in.

Clark also announced last week that two wild turkeys were reported taken during the fall gun or archery season that ran from Oct. 1-31. One was taken by Harley Rose of Washburn, Mo., and the other by Harold D. Hurd of Rt. 1, Seligman, Mo., with both turkeys taken in Benton County and both by shotgun.

About a thousand visitors viewed the more than 100 entries at the Pea Ridge National Military Park Saturday and Sunday as the park hosted its third annual Art Show. The Best in Show award went to Mrs. B.J. (Candy) Hainbach of Springdale for an oil depicting the shadow of a violinist seen on what resembled a rough board wall.

The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

A historic bell was recently installed in the prayer garden of the new Brightwater Memorial United Methodist Church on U.S. Highway 62. Manufactured in New York in 1888, the bell had been used on the Buttram Chapel Methodist Church until 1942. At that time, a tornado pushed the church building over, rendering it unusable. The bell was salvaged by John Miser's father, Russell Miser. In 1947, the Brightwater Methodist Church was destroyed by a tornado and its bell was broken in the fall. John Miser took the Buttram Chapel bell to be used on the new Brightwater church. That building was destroyed by fire in 1994. The new bell stand is made from the brick leftover from the building destroyed in 1994.

Beta Alpha sorority will sponsor Pea Ridge's first Christmas parade at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2.

The season for the Pea Ridge Blackhawk football team ended Friday night with a loss to Danville and head Blackhawk coach Kevin Miller hopes the rebuilding year will mean a much better 1996 season. Pea Ridge lost in overtime 6-0 at Danville in the first round of the playoffs. They finished the year with a 4-7 record.

The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Veterans Jasper Neal, Joe Lasater and Vaun Schell were part of the audience at the Pea Ridge High School Veterans Day ceremony Friday morning in the high school gymnasium. The program included patriotic songs from the band and the choir, a patriotic routine by the cheerleaders and a rendition of "Taps" played by Caleb Duvall. Sgt. Jason Wilson, a graduate of Rogers High School, told gathered veterans and Pea Ridge High School students tales of his experiences in the war in Bosnia.

Pea Ridge's football season came to a close at Osceola last week, a season which was far more successful than preseason prognosticators predicted in August. The season ended 7-4. The Blackhawks were making a playoff appearance for the third time in four years.
