Veterans memorabilia wanted for display

Each week I search for something new and interesting to write about. Sometimes I succeed and other times not so much. I begin by thinking back over the week for something out of the ordinary to share. Most times the week has gone by so quickly and uneventfully that nothing really stands out other than we have visited with some pretty good people, helped a few find a new author or genre or provided some assistance for a computer user. A lot of our time is spent doing paperwork, processing new and new to our library books and trying to find ways to keep our library a welcoming place that people want to visit.

In my Google search for information to share, I learned that Americans go to school, public and academic libraries nearly three times more often than they go to the movies; there are more public libraries than McDonald's in the U.S. and one in three libraries have Facebook accounts.

Did you know that John Grisham, the number one thriller writer, was born in Jonesboro, Ark.? He is just one of a large number of authors who were born or live in Arkansas.

In reading a Facebook post from The Friendly Bookstore in Rogers, I learned the following astonishing facts: 30 percent of Americans have not read a book this year; 69 percent of the 65 and older age range has read a book in the last year, while 80 percent of young adults have read a book; Americans read an average of 12 books a year; the average woman read an average of 14 books last year while the average for a man was nine; there has not been a huge jump from print books to e-books. We have patrons both male and female who read four or more books in a two-week time span or less. We have moms who bring young children to the library two or more times each week. Reading is still alive and well in our community.

If anyone has any military items they would like to lend to the library for display for Veteran's Day, please drop them off at the library. We would be honored to put them on display. Be sure to thank a veteran for their sacrifice and service to our country. Let them know you care and not just on Veterans Day.

See you at the library!
