Pea Ridge Fire Chief Tim Wood said that five firemen and two trucks responded to a house fire at Brightwater Monday night. The unoccupied house located near the entrance to the detached area of Pea Ridge National Military Park caught fire from an undetermined cause. The fire was too far advanced to be stopped when firemen arrived, with part of the roof already having fallen in.

The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Little Flock's City Council Monday night voted to terminate the city marshal position as of that date, March 11, near the end of a four-hour discussion. Immediately upon completion of the roll call vote, alderman Jerry Putman said, "As a result of this, I hereby resign. I think we're making a big mistake." He added that there are a lot of Little Flock people in favor of the Police Department.

Little Flock councilman Jerry Putman and City Marshal Tom Noblitt filed complaints with the Benton County Prosecuting Attorney's office Tuesday afternoon concerning the City Council's action on the city marshal Monday night. The complaint pointed out that the Little Flock City Council has possibly violated state law.

The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

After swearing in two new aldermen, Jana Wright and Randy Sprague, last week, Garfield City Council membership was full and members resumed taking care of business.

The sign says "Baskets" and if you aren't traveling at a high rate of speed past the low-lying house along U.S. Highway 62 east of Garfield, you can see a few of the baskets hanging from the porch roof. The basketmaker is C.B. Cowan. The baskets are made from white oak splints. His many years of experience at the craft are obvious by the beauty of each basket.

The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

In less than two weeks, the old Pea Ridge High School landmark will be demolished. Built between 1929 and 1930, the building initially served the town's entire student population. Saturday morning proved to be a last-chance reunion as many former students came to the school to bid on items inside the building.

Monday night, the School Board hired Rick Neal, principal at Cabot Middle School, as the new principal at Pea Ridge High School to replace Vol Eads who is retiring.

The Free Staters -- Allison Mackey, Ryan Mackey, Tom James, Jonathon Goering and Betsey Goering -- played Civil War music for the Pea Ridge National Battleground Foundation's annual fundraising dinner and auction March 5 at Greer Lingle Middle School in Rogers. The proceeds will go to help purchase two military coats that belonged to Union General Samuel R. Curtis. The coats, one of which was worn by Curtis during the battle here, are currently on display in the visitors center at the Pea Ridge National Military Park. The purchase of the coats and their display cases from a museum in Connecticut will cost nearly $50,000.
