Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

The Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene each year the first week of March pauses to commemorate that issue of the paper to remembering the important chapter of American history that was enacted here in the Pea Ridge Country in 1862. And each year, that edition is dedicated to the noble men from both sides, all of whom fought for a cause in which they wholeheartedly believed.

A Confederate reunion was held on the first day of September 1887 at Elkhorn Tavern, when surviving veteran soldiers met to commemorate the battle and to witness the unveiling of the monument erected to the memory of Generals Ben McColloch, James McIntosh and William Slack, all of whom fell during the Battle of Pea Ridge.

Gina (Regina Hance) Greene of Rogers was crowned Mrs. Arkansas Saturday night in Little Rock. The new Mrs. Arkansas is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hance of Pea Ridge.

Pea Ridge National Military Park will celebrate its 25th anniversary on March 7. A new outdoor viewing platform is scheduled to be built this year to provide handicapped access and provide an unbroken view toward the battlefield. Park visitation for 1984 was 124,282, an increase of 11 percent over the preceding year.

By the time Benton County's largest town, Rogers, was born in 1881, the town of Pea Ridge had become an educational center. By 1916, the institution known locally as the "old Pea Ridge College" had evolved into the public-supported educational system known today as the Pea Ridge Public schools.

Pea Ridge National Military Park will hold a commemorative ceremony at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, to honor those who fought at the Battle of Pea Ridge. More than 500 Civil War reenactors representing the Union and the Confederacy are expected to participate in the ceremony. The reenactors are part of the 3,000 troops expected to participate in a re-enactment of the battle on private property three miles north of the park May 5-7.

An Avoca couple has opened Sunwaves Tanning Salon at 186-B Leetown Road in Pea Ridge. The new business is owned by Vickie and Brett Hobson.

Confederate reenactors Chris Houk and Daniel Barrett explained the workings of an antique Hall's Breech Loading Rifle to visitors near the Elk Horn Tavern on Sunday as the weekend-long commemoration of the Battle of Pea Ridge wound to a close. The Hall's rifle was used in the battle by about 400 Arkansas Confederates.

The Pea Ridge Fire Department received a FEMA grant for $37,851: $8,745 for equipment and $33,311 for personal protective equipment.

Brittany Franken from Pea Ridge Middle School won first place in the Arkansas Art Educators Regional Exhibition in the eighth-grade division. Cody Sanders, also from Pea Ridge, won second place in the seventh-grade division.

The Pea Ridge High School Band, under the direction of David Dickey, brought home its first First Division (Superior) Rating from a region concert festival in almost two decades.
