Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

A brief but intense windstorm struck Pea Ridge Country and most of Northwest Arkansas about daybreak Thursday, leaving a wake of downed trees, branches and other fallen objects. The Edgar VanZandt home located on Arkansas Highway 72 east of Pea Ridge had trees fall on the cyclone fencing. The metal canopy over the newly-extended office at the Pea Ridge High School was crumpled to the ground by a great old oak tree. Speed-o-matric Laundry also was demolished by the windstorm.

Two mechanical problems have plagued the Graphic-Scene this week. The typesetting machine suffered a major breakdown and had to be transported to a Tulsa shop. The editor has been hampered by a mechanical problem with her pacemaker, so she had to enter Rogers Memorial Hospital Tuesday for a bit of straightening out.

County Judge Al Norwood said that in order to proceed with the rebuilding of Leetown Road from Pea Ridge to its intersection with Arkansas Highway 72 at the military park, the county has to have more right-of-way. He asked that residents along the road contribute the right-of-way and said that, in return, the county road department will move fences.

Edgal Holt, Pea Ridge, was named State Chaplain, DAV, Dept. of Arkansas, at the group's state convention Memorial Day in Little Rock. Holt is also certified as Veterans' Administration Volunteer Services chairman for the VA Hospital, Fayetteville.

Continental Telephone Company of Arkansas (Contel) has announced a new service available through its Pea Ridge (451) and Jacket (341) exchanges on June 17 called "Automatic Credit Card Calling (ACCC)." Customers will be able to make credit card type long-distance calls without operator intervention.

The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

The Summit Water Association Steering Committee decided to become a part of the Benton County Rural Development Authority as the Summit Rural Water Association. The committee represents land owners and homeowners interested in obtaining rural water in an area west of Pea Ridge, south of the Missouri state line and east of Bella Vista.

The Pea Ridge Lions Club will hold its seventh annual International Mule Jump on Oct. 7 at the Pea Ridge City Park. Lions Club President Dale Wagner said that a number of new features will be added to this year's event. "We plan to have live entertainment Friday night. Many of the old events will still be held, including the traditional jumps and greased pig chases for children."

Leala Sorrell, daughter of Rusty Sorrell of Garfield, has a big heart. After learning about how children with cancer often lose their hair from chemo treatments, she wanted to help. With a little help from Visions Salon stylist Amanda Pendergraft, Leala donated more than 10 inches of her thick red hair to Locks of Love.

After a large rain Monday night, approximately four feet of water stands around a man hole, which was poured in a natural spring recharge area in southeast Pea Ridge, where Creekwood Manor development connects to the city's sewer line.

Charles Hardy, who died Thursday night, provided many years of service to the city of Pea Ridge. He was instrumental in developing many of the modern amenities residents take for granted today.
