Pea Ridge Fire Chief Sam Spivey was able to give directions by phone for extinguishing a grease fire Monday, thereby not only saving a trip to Brightwater for firemen, but, more importantly, almost certainly saving the mobile home from destruction.

Pea Ridge Volunteer firemen responded Thursday to a fire reported at a residence owned by Helen Eden near the Walnut Hill Church. Fire Chief Sam Spivey said that the house was already engulfed when the 10 Pea Ridge firemen arrived with two trucks.

Reba and Rita Price of Route 4 Bentonville grew 18 1/2 pound zucchinis not in a garden but in a flower bed and they just kept on growing and growing.

The Quorum Court, after some debate among justices of the peace, approved 9 to 2 an ordinance levying a $250 annual permit fee and 6 percent gross receipts tax for private clubs in unincorporated areas of Benton County last Thursday.

Pea Ridge Junior High Cheerleaders and their coach brought home a trophy, three blue ribbons and a red from competition last week at Conway. The team included Hollie Herron, Deidre McCool, Angie Robinson, Angie Paulsen, captain, Candee Carter, Charlie Hokeah, Tracey Patterson and Tia Kvamso, co-captain. Their coach is Lisa Morrison.

A patch containing over 75 marijuana plants between 7 and 8 feet tall was confiscated by Benton County Sheriff Roy Farber and two detectives Friday. The patch was found north of Arkansas Highway 127 between Garfield and Lost Bridge.

The Pea Ridge National Military Park has constructed three deer exclosures to begin a long-range study of the effect of deer on the vegetation. Park Ranger John Knox said that the study is being conducted by the Arkansas Cooperative Research Unit of the National Biological Service at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Knox said that there is a goal of returning the vegetation in the park to the state it was in at the time of the Battle of Pea Ridge in 1862.

The 1940 graduating class of Pea Ridge High School held its 55th class reunion July 14 at the Cannonball Cafe in Pea Ridge. Nine of the 13 class members were present, two members are deceased and two were unable to attend. Those attending were Emma Lou (Crabtree) Pamplin, Joe Lasater, Fred McKinney, Wanda (Bolain) Coffey, Rex Evans, Dora (Walters) Rippey, Evelyn (Wells) Frazier, Hazel (Miller) Walker and Janell (Hickman) Webb.

The Regional Chamber of Commerce Serving Northwest Arkansas and Southwest Missouri officially opened its office on North Curtis Avenue in downtown Pea Ridge on July 27. The office, donated by CenturyTel, will be staffed by volunteers.

The Pea Ridge 10-year-old All Stars recently took second place in District, advancing to State in Osceola. The players were Dayton Winn, Dusty Morgan, Garrett Morgan, Isaac Mangrum, Colt Heflin, Dalton Morgan, Austin Easterling, Mike Craddock, Blake Roughton, Zach Norris, Jacob Hall, Tanner Hedstrom and bat boy, Drew Winn. Coaches are Dickie Winn, Carroll Morgan, Perry Morgan and Matt Hedstrom.

Mark Burkette and John Cody of the Pea Ridge Water Department and Shane McClelland and Stick Evans of McClelland and Sons worked to close off a break in a main water line Monday afternoon on Carr Street. Construction workers on Leetown Crossing broke the line while digging a hole for a manhole. Gary Tuszynski said the department relieved pressure on the lines by opening a fire hydrant on Carr Street to keep the line from losing all pressure, which would require a boil order.
