Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

The highway widening and improvement construction program presently underway on Highway 94 between downtown Pea Ridge and the Highway 62 intersection in Rogers has left the new pavement in places several inches above the old shoulders. City marshal Johnny Demaree issued a warning to drivers to use caution while driving on the highway.

A second undefeated team here in Little League this season are the Mets, a tee ball team for youngsters 5 to 8. They team played a 12 to 0 season. They are Perry Morgan, John King, Roy Fite, Travis Woods, Brent Taylor, Darrin Ricketts, Jasper Cook and Mark Jarecki, with manager Gene Taylor.

A new post office building and postmaster at Avoca are just two of the changes that have been taking place along U.S. Highway 62. The new postmaster is Luther H. Smith, formerly with the Post Office at Ozark.

About 50 people attended a meeting July 18 of the "Coalition for Better Schools," called by Theresa Pockrus, persistent critic, along with school board member Andy Buck of the Pea Ridge Schools' administration. Pockrus reviewed figures purporting to show the district's finances are in disarray, that funds have been improperly spent and that the district is operating dangerously close to insolvency. Administration figures show the district in healthy condition.

Gateway has joined a growing list of small municipalities to levy a permit tax and gross receipts tax on private clubs serving alcoholic beverages. Avoca passed a similar measure some months ago.

Northeast Benton County Volunteer Ambulance Service (VAS) has started a campaign for the Aug. 6 referendum to establish an emergency medical services district in northeast Benton County. A $15 annual service fee for ambulance service will be charged to each household in the district if it is established.

Steven Starner won gold and silver medals earlier this month in the Special Olympic World Games in New Haven, Conn. Starner, 20, won the gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle relay and the silver in the 100-meter butterfly. He also won a fourth-place ribbon in the 400-meter freesyle and a fifth place in the 200-meter freesysle. Starner is the son of Tim and Candi Starner, owners of Pea Ridge Tax Service.

Mayor Jackie Crabtree announced the winner of the city seal contest is Parker Hunt. The Pea Ridge City Council voted to adopt the winning entry as the city's official seal. Hunt will receive a $225 prize donated by Pea Ridge businesses.

A carnival and silent auction in rural Pea Ridge Saturday helped raise funds to continue horse therapy. Northwest Arkansas Pediatric Therapy Services drew a large crowd in an effort to keep down the costs of treatment for local kids. "Horse therapy provides a lot of things for kids," said Wesley Wilkerson, husband of therapist Shelia Wilkerson. "It's a good environment to link up a child with horses," he said. "Kids fall in love with the animals."

Standing water is still an issue at Standing Oaks subdivision. At the Pea Ridge City Council meeting July 19, city attorney Howard Slinkard agreed to meet with city officials, inspectors and homeowners in Standing Oaks to clarify the legal issues relating to drainage problems in the subdivision on Highway 94 west of Pea Ridge.
