Competition during football camps hones skills

For three Monday nights this summer, Pea Ridge Blackhawk football players will suit up in half-pads and scrimmage against Gravette Lions and Farmington Cardinals in football camp. On Monday, July 13, and Monday, July 27, the camps will be hosted by Pea Ridge. On Monday, July 20, the three teams met in Farmington.

"The biggest thing is getting the repetitions in," head Blackhawk coach Tony Travis said. "They get a chance to work at it and get better."

"It gets a little monotonous working against ourselves," he said, adding that the competition level increases when working with other teams.

With spring football, Travis said, the team got pretty good offensively and defensively. With summer camps, they are continuing to improve.

He said there are 69 athletes on the roster with 62 athletes at most summer practices.

"That's the biggest positive coming out of the summer -- most of the guys are here the majority of the time," Travis said.

Blackhawk football begins in earnest with a scrimmage against Greenland on Aug. 24 and Pride Night on Aug. 28.
