"This is probably our sixth year," Tony Travis, head Blackhawk football coach, said. "We've always had around 60 to 80 campers and we're hoping for that many again this year. We've already pre-registered 25 to 30."

Camp, designed for second- to seventh-grade athletes, is run by the Blackhawk football staff (all seven varsity coaches will be present) assisted by eight to 12 varsity players and the certified trainer, Jamie Mann.

"The camp will include fundamental drills in all areas of the game of football including offense, defense, special teams, weight-lifting, conditioning, agility and speed-work," Travis said, adding "We will also stress other building blocks of the Blackhawk football program like character, discipline, team work and Blackhawk pride!"

Gatorade will be sold at break times and at the end of the day ($1). All campers will receive a T-shirt and participation awards.

"One reason I like it," Travis said, "is that it familiarizes our coaches with those guys who are going to be playing football. It gives everyone a name and a face. We try, when we can, to get to Saturday games ... it also helps them know us."

"It's about building relationships," Travis said.

On Tuesday, Travis said athletes will learn about the offensive and defensive positions. "They will learn a little bit about a lot of different things."

On Wednesday, they will be shown the weight room and learn about strength and speed. They'll learn proper technique for weight lifting.

"Another thing that is really beneficitial," Travis said, "is that it acclimiates them to the weather so they're ready when they start football practice."

During breaks, Mann will speak to the young athletes about injuries, nutrition and hydration. She will also be available to assist in treating any injuries.

All students receive a T-shirt; a camp picture will be taken Thursday.
