Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

Meeting Friday night, the Garfield PTA voted to landscape a portion of the between-walkways in front of the Garfield School. Members voted to adopt a plan that calls for erection of a sign containing the name of the school and the date established.

Benton County's first garden-type mausoleum is being built at Benton County Memorial Park, located on U.S. Highway 71 midway between Rogers and Bentonville. W.B. McCabe, president and manager of Memorial Park, said that there are two concrete-structured mausoleums in the county, one at Bentonville and one at Siloam Springs, both of which are several decades old.

The Pea Ridge Little League team went undefeated this season closing out Wednesday evening with a 16-6 win over the Braves. The Oroiles won 18 games and lost none this season. On the team are Fred Sutton, Greg Stival, Roger Stival, Doug Houston Jr., Ronald Schumacher, Mark Schumacher, John Wiltgen, Jeff Wiltgen, Jerry Wiltgen, Todd Verge, Brian Scales and Micahel Martin. Paul Stival is manager and the coaches are Jim Schumacher and Sammy Hurd. Doug Houston Sr. served as assistant.

On July 4, Jim Hall and Heber Messer pitched in together to be the first to ring the old bell in its new belltower. They were followed by Mabel Hardy, John W. Sampier, Ruby DeFolliart, and then a long line of folks who just wanted to ring the bell.

Little Flock City Council appointed a new mayor at their meeting Monday night. Ellis Thiel was unanimously appointed by the council to fill the unexpired term of office left by ex-mayor Roger McGuire. McGuire resigned effective May 29.

H.W. Brown, Pea Ridge, brought in a 19-inch-long zucchini that he grew in his garden at 910 S. Curtis. The squash is 17 inches in circumference. He said this is the first time in 15 years that he and his wife have planted a garden -- now maybe he'll plant more often.

The Pea Ridge Volunteer Fire Department's new rescue van is on station and personnel trained to utilize it are on standby. Paul Simpkins, rescue captain and a member of the Fire Department, said that the van will go to every fire scene and every serious traffic accident.

New Pea Ridge School superintendent Roy Norvell is settling in and beginning to look five years ahead to when he hopes the district can get serious about a new high school building. Norvell, 54, replaced Marvin Higginbottom, who resigned after seven years in the post. "One thing I'm really excited about is the purchase of 20 acres." Earlier this year, the school board bought 20 acres on the southwest corner of Weston Street and Highway 94 as a site for a new high school.

Now in its 55th year, the Pea Ridge Community Fair, sponsored by Beta Alpha Sorority, brought local residents, family and friends together for four nights, in spite of soaring July temperatures.

Miss Pea Ridge 2005, Ashley Owens received her sash from 2004 Miss Pea Ridge Kendra London at the Pea Ridge Fair Wednesday night, July 6. Other contestants were Kristy Ingram, Miss Congeniality, Ashley Bangs, Elizabeth Johnson, Jessica Hinton, first runner-up, Ashley Roughton and Jamie Schwyhart.
