Landis named grand marshal

Eula Landis is used to working during the annual fair and fair parade. This year, she will ride at the head of the parade.

Landis, 77, has been named the Grand Marshal "for her loving service to her community through Beta Alpha," James Crews, president of Beta Alpha, said.

Landis has been a member of Beta Alpha for 15 years, she said, explaining that when she retired from working, she wanted to be involved in something in the community.

Originally from Nebraska, Landis said she and her husband moved to south Arkansas before coming to Northwest Arkansas in 1977. She and Donald were married for more than 50 years when he passed away three years ago. The couple had seven children (five of whom live in the Northwest Arkansas area), 13 or 14 grandchildren and 10 or 12 great-grandchildren, Landis said.

"Eula Landis is mentor to new members and even as getting around and doing things gets more difficult she continues to help in any way she can. Eula loves Pea Ridge, her family and community," Crews said.

And, he should know. He's her grandson.

"I don't get around too good," Landis said, "I'm an extra hand when they need me."

She said that she has helped put on the senior citizens dinner, has served as president, attended several state conventions, oversees the Most Beautiful Baby contest and helps campaign for nightly drawings during the fair.
