Read an old classic

posted: 07/29/2015 5 a.m.

There are less than 60 days to the beginning of fall. I am most certainly ready for what I hope will be cooler temperatures. In a few short weeks, students will be returning to school even though it seems as though their break has been very short. Perhaps it just seems short to me because I have not spent that time trying to entertain high energy children 24/seven.

'Historic' football anyone?

posted: 07/29/2015 5 a.m.

We have American football here in the good old U.S. of A. with Australians and other English-speaking countries playing a football-ish sport called rugby while most of the world engages in what they call football but what we call soccer. Until recently, I had never heard of a sport called Calcio Storico, Italian for "historic football."

Constant barrage of 'news' prompts questions

posted: 07/29/2015 5 a.m.

Many years ago a newspaper reporter responded to a question by saying "we don't make the news, we just report the news." That might have been true in the newspaper business in that era, but modern day technology and politics have helped television news cross the line. If you saw the self-made short video" of Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC candidate for Republican nominee for president) destroying his cell phone you know the source of my comment. Apparently the senator's video was intended for social media sites as an answer to Donald Trump's sharing the senator's cell phone number with the public. The supporters of Mr. Trump started to call the number which was actually a working number and the games began.

Ginger Blue -- restoring in style

posted: 07/22/2015 5 a.m.

GINGER BLUE, Mo. -- Along the banks of the Elk River sits the village of Ginger Blue, believed to be named after a Native American chief who lived in the region during the 18th century. In 1915, railroad tycoon Charles O. Williams built a resort lodge there for city folk who were looking to "return to nature." By 1920, train cars full of visitors from Kansas City, Wichita and Tulsa were pouring into the small town to escape big-city stresses and relax. In conjunction with the river, nearby caves and local "healing" sulphur wells, tourism fueled the area for the better part of the century.

Bill Cosby, whose reputation was bigger than life, has proven to have drugged some women for sexual purposes and the Duggar family is not really perfect after all. Next thing we know it will turnout that Father "really didn't know best" and television just made unlikely heros of actors for the purposes of entertainment and keeping viewership high.

Arkansas speech can be fascinating and colorful. Our old Ozark speech is still heard around northwest Arkansas and southwest Missouri, but it is not nearly so pronounced as it once was. Many people have moved into the area, bringing western and northern and mid-western ways of saying things, and on television the speech that we hear is commonly not Ozark, but New York or Boston or Hollywood or mid-west speech. We've become very cosmopolitan, and all the influences have had an effect on the way we talk.

posted: 07/01/2015 5 a.m.

Sometime, in another lifetime when I was about 13 years old, an unusual thing happened. Our family attended a funeral together at the Brightwater Methodist Church when it was located on the east side of U.S. Highway 62. This was unusual because we seldom attended funerals as a family and my father almost never took off work for a funeral unless it was a family member. The deceased was not a family member, I remember that much, but I do not know who had died. What I do remember is we went to hear the individual who was speaking at the funeral. The speaker was a man named Williams who was blind and had taught school, probably at Brightwater, sometime during my father's youth.
