Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

The office of Congressman John Paul Hammerschmidt Friday announced the approval of a grant in the amount of $24,000 to the City of Pea Ridge. The grant will be used to construct a ballpark on about five acres of donated park land located on Weston Street.

Another Pea Ridger completed training in the Emergency Medical Technician program at Gravette. Jerry Collins brings to four the number of persons in Pea Ridge now qualified to serve with Sisco Ambulance Service. A third man, John Knox, who is employed by Pea Ridge National Military Park, also has undergone the training and might be considered available in a massive emergency.

The Pea Ridge Blackhawk Junior Basketball Girls won the district tournament in St. Paul last week. The champs include Cassie Webb, Karen Sheppard, Lori Cheek, Stacie Collins, Missy Patton, Gina Howell, Michelle Martin, Michelle Larson, Kari Aubrey, Coach Larry Walker, Trish McAllister, Dawna Patterson, Juli Paukune, Valerie Ramsey and Christy Clark.

Volunteer Ambulance Service of Northeast Benton County presented a petition to the Benton County Quorum Court Thursday night seeking the establishment of a subordinate service district to provide tax income for the service.

The dispute over payment of materials for surfacing Henry Little Circle was settled Thursday night when council voted to accept Mayor Lester Hall's offer to pay $436, with the city absorbing the balance of $400.

State representatives have approved legislation to provide for moments of silence in the public schools. The moment-of-silence legislation would permit teachers to begin the school day with a moment of silence with participation by all students who desire to participate. Moments of silence would be required in each classroom if teachers were directed to do so by their school board.

Former Pea Ridge Water superintendent Floyd Blackwell is the new manager of the Benton County Water District 1 in Avoca. Blackwell replaces Diane Bowen, who held the position for a number of years and resigned to pursue other interests. Water District 1 serves 1,300 customers.

With some commission reductions on the part of realtors handling the deal, Charles and Judy Lee sold approximately 10.5 acres to the Pea Ridge School District at the School Board meeting Monday night. The acreage adjoins land already owned by the district at the corner of Weston Street and East Pickens Road. The additional acres might be used for an elementary school, although superintendent Mike Van Dyke said any of several uses were possible.

Jerry Burton, a new member of the Pea Ridge City Council, called on the mayor and his fellow alderman at a council meeting Feb. 15 to "back up and regroup" before new development overtaxes city infrastructure. Mayor Jackie Crabtree said he would like to form subcommittees to handle specific issues.

Pea Ridge High School cheerleaders Jake Patton, Ashley Boller and Jeremy Young placed third in co-ed stunt competition at Regionals.

Mrs. Janet Spradling's kindergarten class presented a musical play "No Valentines Left Behind" for the elementary school on Monday, Feb. 14. Spradling wrote the musical, which was narrated by elementary school principal David Holmes on a set designed by John McGee, elementary school art teacher.
