Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

A Pea Ridge High School senior, Frederick Harold Kinney, is one of 45 Arkansas youths who have been nominated by Congressman John Paul Hammerschmidt to compete for admission to the Army, Navy, Air Force and Merchant Marine academies. Kinney, the son of Mrs. Betty Jane Kinney of Pea Ridge, is one of 17 of the 45 who were nominated to compete for admission to the Naval Academy at Annapolis.

Lance Corporal Jimmy Staton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Staton of Pea Ridge, recently returned from a year's tour of duty in Iwakuni, Japan, with the U.S. Marines. He visited with his parents and brother, Johnny, also a sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Robertson of Hiwasse. On Feb. 3, he reported to his new station of duty at Albany, Ga.

Gateway Town Council Thursday night, following considerable discussion of the need for dependable service for the area, approved a motion to pledge $1,000 to be contributed to the Volunteer Ambulance Service of Northeast Benton County. The pledge requires that the funds be used for the purchase of another ambulance to back-up the present ambulance.

When the 1984-85 calendar for Pea Ridge schools was prepared, the calendar called for 15 holidays and four of those days were "weather days." As of Monday, when school was not held, the local schools had taken nine weather days.

Over 200 years of family history are documented in the latest book by Pea Ridge resident and former Times owner Billie Jines. Jines/Joins/Joines Vol. II, complements Vol. 1, published in 1982, and contains, in addition to over 4,000 names, copies of original documents, some dating to the early 1700s, as well as numerous family anecdotes.

Two Pea Ridge senior high school students successfully auditioned for the two Region One Honor Bands and attended a clinic held in Mountain Home on Jan. 16-17. Jennifer Wagner, a senior, and Jennifer Waymack, a sophomore, participated in the district clinic after successfully passing a rigorous audition. Wagner earned a seat in the Blue Band, marking her fith consecutive year to earn an all-region spot.

The Pea Ridge School Board chose Sandy Easley of Pea Ridge from among six candidates as a replacement for board member Randy Bryant, who resigned. Mrs. Easley, wife of Ray Easley, is believed to be the first female of the Pea Ridge School Board. She is also city recorder and clerk for Pea Ridge City Court.

Last month, the Bentonville Police Department honored one of their own and Pea Ridge native Officer Tina Lorence with the title of "Police Officer of the Year for 2004." Officer Lorence is the daughter of Pat and Gene Dean of Pea Ridge.

Brianna Wright, senior, was crowned 2005 Pea Ridge Colors Day Queen at ceremonies before Friday's games with Eureka Springs. Wright is a member of the Lady Blackhawks Basketball team. Assisting with the coronation were senior Blackhawks Andrew Fielder, Ryan Cooper and Matt Johnston. Maids, all seniors, were Brittany Arnold, Michelle Keene, Missy Swanson, Amanda Ziese, Melody Wisley and Brittany Ferry.
