Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

The City of Pea Ridge has become the first town in Benton County to be approved for matching Bicentennial Funds for projects. Two projects submitted from Pea Ridge met the approval of the board, which approved 100 percent matching funds of $1,500 on the one for the picnic area of Pea Ridge Day Municipal Park, and another, submitted by the Pea Ridge Extension Homemaker Club for upgrading of the EH Club Building here, received $250 in matching funds for the purchase of a new refrigerator and stove.

The first meeting of the Pea Ridge Planning Commission following its discovery that it would need to be reorganized due to a technical error in the ordinance establishing it was held on Monday night, Jan. 27, at the home of Golda Calvin. Jay Hale was elected as chairman, Charles Hardy as vice chairman and Mrs. Calvin as secretary.

Saturday's snow was responsible for a collision and the disruption of traffic on Arkansas Highway 94 south of Pea Ridge on the south Sugar Creek hill. Three vehicles were following an AHTD dump truck which was plowing snow on the road's shoulder. All vehicles were traveling south.

Little Flock has a new deputy city marshal -- W.T. (Bill) Palmer, who moved to the city in December and has many years police experience. For the present, City Marshal Tom Noblitt said, he is working voluntarily to allow Noblitt to have some time off. Palmer came to Little Flock from Clinton, Ind. As a deputy, he will be working two days a week, the days Noblitt is not working.

John Wesley Sampier Sr., Rogers, former superintendent of Pea Ridge schools (1931-1933) was honored by the Arkansas House of Representatives on the first day of the 75th session. It was the 50th anniversary of Sampier's election to the Arkansas House. Sampier also served as the superintendent of the Garfield schools from 1934-1936.

Pea Ridge Police Chief C.W. Yarrow submitted his resignation Monday night and it was accepted, said Mayor Jackie Crabtree. Yarrow has been ill for much of the last month and was still hospitalized on Monday.

Joseph Ragland, son of David and Sherrie Ragland of Pea Ridge, along with two others from Southwest R-V in Washburn, Beth Shrum and Kevin Reynard, participated in the Junior High Honors Band Concert on Feb. 4 in Webb City, Mo. Ragland played baritone and Shrum played clarinet in the seventh grade band, and Reynard played trumpet in the eighth grade band.

Senior Brooke Anderson, daughter of Terry and Debbie Anderson, was escorted Friday by Jake Hammond. Brooke was selected as Pea Ridge High School Color Queen for 1995. Brooke, a member of the Lady Blackhawk basketball team, was presented before Friday evening's game.

Garfield got a new mayor Feb. 1 when elected Mayor Bobby Flickinger resigned, citing health reasons. Laura Hamilton, a city council member since 2000, received the nod from the other councilmen to take over the position of mayor and complete the two years left on Flickinger's term.

Pea Ridge Police Officer Cerilla Doyle took the fingerprints of Berkely Mardis, 6, daughter of Bill and Lori Anne Mardis, at a fingerprinting clinic held Friday afternoon by Denny Ledford, agent/owner of MetLife Auto & Home insurance agency in Pea Ridge.

Rick Weidner of NEBCO presented the first place trophy in the NEBCO Chili Cook-Off to Cassie Morgan Saturday. Morgan's sponsor was Wholesale Laminates. Rondy Lee with Arvest Bank took third place and second place honors went to Peggy Jones.
