Learn the truth about mental health

Mental illness is commonly misunderstood; however, recently public education and awareness has increased. The more information about mental health is available, the more support for those individuals increases as well. As we continue to work on supporting individuals diagnosed with a mental health disorder, it is important to respect the day to day challenges they can be faced with.

Myth No. 4: Individuals with mental illness struggle to hold down a job due to inability to manage daily stress.

Truth No. 4: Individuals diagnosed with a mental illness are capable of being as productive as other employees. Mental illness is like other medical illnesses, in that it can have moments that the symptoms can be overwhelming, especially if untreated. If individuals receive ongoing treatment for a mental health diagnosis, they are capable of leading meaningful and productive lives.

Myth No. 5: People diagnosed with a mental illness can "snap out of it."

Truth No. 5: There are several factors that contribute to mental illness such as genetics, physical illness, brain injury, brain chemistry, trauma, or family history of mental illness. While individuals can seek treatment to manage symptoms and some can recover in time. Treatment options can include medication, therapy or a combination of both.

Those diagnosed with mental illness are capable of living healthy, happy and productive lives. With the right support and encouragement, individuals can find appropriate and healthy ways to manage symptoms.
