Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

In a transaction that will become effective Monday, Sept. 1, Mr. and Mrs. Tim Wood of Pea Ridge sold the Pea Ridge Grocery to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mendenhall. The Woods have owned the store the past five years and will remain Pea Ridge residents. The Mendenhalls come from Dublin, Calif.

The Pea Ridge Child Development Center (Head Start) will open Sept. 2. The center is located at the VFW Building on Curtis Avenue. Applications are now being taken. Mrs. Louis Carter of Garfield is director-teacher.

With the urging of school superintendent Roy A. Roe, the School Board Monday night officially changed the name of the "Old Gym" to "Assembly Hall." The new gym structure will go by the name "The Gym."

To Icelandic AFS student Gudny Margret Hjaltadottir, our summer days seem short, and the nights long and black. In the two weeks since her arrival to spend the Pea Ridge school year with the Gene Aubrey family here, she has found it hard to adjust to the difference in latitude. Her home is the fishing village of Djupivogur. She will be a senior at PRHS.

With a combined elementary and high school enrollment nearing 650, the Pea Ridge School Board of Education approved a tentative budget of nearly one and a half million dollars on Aug. 23.

Ann Spencer's new shop, Sports Plus, at the corner of Ark. Hwy. 72 West and Weston Street in Pea Ridge, is filled with sports and athletic togs for every member of the family, plus at lot of equipment. Lots of it comes with Blackhawk, Razorback, Garfield or Southwest emblems, and many without emblems, in various colors.

Garfield Elementary School has undergone renovation and adaption to accommodate its every-increasing enrollment. There were 221 students as of Monday. Two kindergartens will be held in the building this year, as well as two second grades and two sixth grades. In order to provide classroom space for all the students, the school is renting Garfield City Hall for the two sixth-grade classes.

Melissa Woods, daughter of Joe and Paula Woods of Pea Ridge, has been selected as a finalist in the 1995 Pre-Teen Arkansas Scholarship and Recognition Program to be held Sept. 2-9 at the Holiday Inn in Springdale.

Leigh Ann Pinto of Pea Ridge recently opened Headhunters hair salon on Ark. Highway 72, just west of the intersection with Ark. Highway 94. Her twin sister, Lisa Dawn Deschane of Pea Ridge, has joined Headhunters specializing in acrylic nails, manicures and pedicures.

Four fourth-grades from Pea Ridge Elementary School took first in the fifth-grade-and-under division in the Great Cardboard Train Race Saturday during Rogers' Frisco Festival. Audrey Gibson, Shelby Rose, Jerika Schooley and Afton Danner built the train in the elementary art room. This was the fifth year that Pea Ridge has won this event.

The Sew 'N Sew Quilt Shop opened Aug. 9 at 838 N. Curtis Ave., in Pea Ridge. Owner Linda McKenzie has been in the Pea Ridge area for 40 years. She plans to offer quilting classes at her new shop. McKenzie is an accomplished seamstress and has many quilts on display.

The Pea Ridge Library is pleased to announce that it has been designated by the Arkansas Center for the Book at the State Library as an Official Book Discussion site for "If All Arkansas Read the Same Book." The book selected for 2005 is "Gods and Generals" by Michael Shaara. Copies are now available at the Pea Ridge Library.
