Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

The Pea Ridge Little League Association on Sunday voted to reverse its earlier commitment by not transferring title to the five-acre park to the city. The action jeopardized for the city the $24,000 matching fund grant that was approved by the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation for construction of a ballpark. The action also places in jeopardy the $3,000 now in the bank for the development of a public picnic area in one part of the five acres. City money has already gone into the park. The city laid a two-inch waterline in the park. The city also has been paying the utilities on both water and lights for the park and had installed one street light for the park.

Kenneth and Lydia Ford have sold the A & B Service and Drive-In at Garfield to Northwest Oil Co. Carl Gray of Rogers will be the new manager and for now will have open the grocery store, gas and laundry mat.

The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

The move from the old Pea Ridge Post Office to the new one is expected to take place sometime next week, said an official with the U.S. Postal Service in Dallas. Facilities official Larry Brooks said, "We're anticipating the third week in August." Brooks said, however, that the new Garfield Post Office will not likely be ready for occupation until the end of the month. Construction on the Garfield facility started several weeks prior to beginning work on the Pea Ridge Post Office, but the contractor encountered rock formations that had not been anticipated. Both have identical floor plans.

Three popular names in gospel music are scheduled to perform at Pea Ridge City Park the night of Oct. 6 in the first Pre-Mule Jump Gospel Concert. Performing will be the Carriers, Clark and David Patillo. The Carriers are based in Pea Ridge.

The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Pea Ridge High School will soon have its own baseball/softball complex. At its meeting Monday night, the Pea Ridge School Board gave superintendent of schools Mike Van Dyke the authority to negotiate and finalize the purchase of the Babe Ruth fields, which five families own. The fields are west of the high school at the corner of Ark. Highway 94 and It'll Do Road.

At the Connolly farm near Avoca, it's all about sheep. And at the Benton County Fair this year, the sheep competitions will likely be all about the Connollys. Sarah Connolly, 14, and Catherine Connolly, 15, have been raising sheep since they were 5 or 6 years old. The girls started out with just two sheep but now have more than 100. The sisters spend four to five hours a day feeding the sheep and exercising the show lambs.
