Pea Ridge Academy helps in credit recovery

Pea Ridge Academy is a school designed as a "credit recovery program focused on the emotional and social needs of the students" designed to help the students transition back into high school and/or meet graduation requirements and develop a plan for after school, according to Joshua Johnson, director.

The academy is located off North Davis Street to the east of Pea Ridge Intermediate School. There will be 25 students from eighth through 12th grade, 11 of whom will be attending Pea Ridge Manufacturing and Business Academy and one of whom will attend NTI.

"There will be a greater emphasis on personal efficacy. They will know that the greater chance they implement it, practice it, the more they'll have self discipline and self-control and the more likely they are to succeed," Johnson said.

A new teacher, Casey Connior, this year is "well versed in project based learning" and has experience with hands-on activities. She will be actively promoting engagement in the community and looking for ways to develop relationshps with community service organizations, Johnson said.

Students in the academy spend their morning in learning, then, focus on credit recover after lunch.

"Each student will have their own academic plan," Johnson said. "We'll be working with parents, students, teachers -- all of the stake holders in that child's life.
