A nose for drugs

A unique odor on the breeze outside Pea Ridge City Court on Tuesday, March 24, aroused Capt. Chris Olson's suspicions.

"While ... outside of the court building... I kept getting the smell of strong marijuana coming from somewhere close," Olson wrote in his report.

Olson's investigative instincts led him to a car parked across the street where Billy Periman was waiting for a friend in court.

Periman admitted he was on probation for possession of marijuana and after repeated questioning, admitted he had marijuana with him.

The man for whom Periman was waiting was on parole. Neither had valid driver's licenses.

Police found a plastic baggie of marijuana (1.3 oz.) and a marijuana pipe in the car. Billy Joe Periman, 25, Rogers, was cited for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

"I'm thankful to have officers like Captain Olson on this department where we can utilize their training and experience to make a positive impact on this community," Police Chief Ryan Walker said.
