Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

A 31-year old man was killed by a shotgun blast at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday in a residence located near Codling's Corner at the intersection of U.S. Highway 62 and Arkansas Highway 72 east of Pea Ridge. No arrests have been made at this time. The Benton County Sheriff's Office is continuing its investigation of the incident.

Mrs. Billy Hall of Pea Ridge was injured in a two-vehicle accident that took place at the intersection of South Curtis Avenue (Ark. Hwy. 94) and Harris Street about 8:30 p.m. Monday. She was taken to Rogers Memorial Hospital by Sisco ambulance.

The new Pea Ridge Child Development Center, also known as Head Start, was opened at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Building on North Curtis Avenue.

More than 40 people attending the Volunteer Ambulance Service of Northeast Benton County "Town Hall" meeting Thursday night at the Garfield Elementary School signed the petitions to form the service district before they left. Board Chairman Jim Campbell told The TIMES reporter Sunday that over 100 signatures had been obtained by noon that day.

A petition signed by 18 residents of Barris Lane will be presented to the Pea Ridge City Council at its meeting Thursday night requesting that the speed limit on Barris Lane be set at 15 miles per hour. The people on Barris Lane are requesting that a 15 mile an hour speed limit sign be placed for this road. There are several people who drive 65 miles an hour on the dead end street.

"Victory is sweet!" That's what the Pea Ridge Blackhawks were thinking after their 33-0 win over Winslow Friday night in the Blackhawk stadium. Supporters agreed that it was time and they filled the stands to see the victory.

A decision should be made within the next several days on the sites of new post office buildings in Garfield and Gravette, but the site for the new Pea Ridge post office building may not be known for a week or so.

Bill Evans, a loan officer for the Bank of Pea Ridge, has joined the Pea Ridge Fire Department. Evans has been attending the Fire Department training sessions for several weeks. He is working for his firefighter's certification.

A ceremonial signing of the U.S. Constitution will be held on Saturday, Sept. 18, at Pea Ridge National Military Park. Doug Keller, interpretive specialist, said, "Visitors may sign their names to a large parchment replica of the document originally signed on Sept. 17, 1782, in Philadelphia."

The Pea Ridge School Board gave architect Steve Elliott the go-ahead Monday night to develop blueprints for a new junior high school. The community passed a 5-mill tax increase in May to fund construction of the $4.7 million, 63,195-square-foot building, which will hold 500 students, grades 7-9.

The Pea Ridge City Council will consider an ordinance making the office of mayor a full-time position. Mayor Jackie Crabtree recently retired from Wal-Mart and asked the council to think about making the mayor's job full time.

An exchange student from China will have the opportunity to attend the Pea Ridge High School for the 2004-05 academic year, thanks to the SHARE! High School Exchange Program. The Howard family of Pea Ridge will host Wing-Kun So from Hong Kong in China.
