Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

One of the first steps taken by the Pea Ridge High School in starting progress toward going beyond the coveted "A" rating to the maximum rating was to introduce art into the curriculum this year. Mrs. Wanda Roe, the Home Economics teacher, also is a certified art instructor.

An open house for the new Pea Ridge gym and new elementary addition, as well as for the entire school plant, was scheduled at Monday night's monthly meeting of the Pea Ridge School Board.

The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Application for a new radio station to serve Pea Ridge was submitted to the Federal Communication by Benton County Broadcasting Co. The application company was a general partnership of Phyllis O. Markley and Steven J. Crowley, each a 50 percent partner and both listed addresses in Peoria, Ill. They had proposed to construct their twin broadcasting towers about three miles north of Rogers on Arkansas Highway 94, to operate in the daytime at 1440 KHZ and to provide news and public affairs programming to meet the needs of the community of license, Pea Ridge.

Heavy equipment moved onto the Pea Ridge Schools campus last week to start erecting superstructure for the new cafetorium-classroom building. Despite heavy rains, the crew showed up ready to go and work began almost as soon as the last drops fell.

A Memphis firm has been awarded a contract for a new Post Office in Garfield. Winning the contract is Dattel Realty Co. of Memphis, said postal official Larry Brooks, who handles property leases for postal facilities in Arkansas. The new Post Office building will be located on the northeast corner of U.S. Highway 62 and County Road 67 or North Seamster Road, about three-quarters of a mile west of the existing facility.

Ever wonder what happens to worn out greyhounds after they've run their last race? Lucky ones are adopted, like Riverview Hank, now owned by Ellie Mae Hollingsworth of Pea Ridge. Hollingsworth said: "We began looking for a greyhound three years ago. We filed with Greyhound Pets of America." Greyhounds, the only breed mentioned in the Bible, Proverbs 30:29-31 (DJV), are primarily used for racing.

The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

In a field once strewn with cornstalks and the broken bodies of Union and Confederate troops, an army of a different sort rallied on a brisk Saturday morning. Close to 200 volunteers -- most of them children -- showed up to lay fence line, repaint cannon carriages and shuck corn at Pea Ridge National Military Park.

Sgt. Mark Kellogg, U.S. Army Reserve, surprised his daughter Mikayla, a kindergartner at Pea Ridge Elementary, last week by coming to the school to see her as soon as he arrived in town. Kellogg, who has been serving in the U.S. Army in Baghdad for the last seven months, was expected home on leave, but not as soon as he arrived.

A large crowd attended the grand opening of Derry and Sharon Camp's D&S Auction Service Oct. 21. Their new AMKO building has 2,400 square feet of auction area, 1,008 square feet of under roof storage outside and 960 square feet of living area. The building was constructed by Myrick Construction Inc. of Pea Ridge.
