Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

A number of youngsters who are members of Pea Ridge Girl Scout Troop No. 27 and/or students in Miss Maxine Morrison's fifth-grade class, visited the Graphic-Scene Thursday to get better acquainted with their hometown paper during National Newspaper Week. They were accompanied by Miss Morrison and by two Scout leaders, Mrs. Betty Carter and Mrs. Doris Hanner.

It was decided by the Pea Ridge Chamber of Commerce Board that school superintendent Roy Roe, city recorder Fred McKinney and board member L.E. Hardy would attend a Physician Recruitment Fair at the state medical school to meet prospective doctors, one of who it was anticipated might be interested in settling in Pea Ridge.

Utah Smith of Pea Ridge grew a 17-pound butternut squash. Smith said that he had been told by old-timers that to raise big squash, the gardener should save the seeds of those with long necks, which is what he had done in previous seasons.

As a result of the petitions requesting lower speed limits on U.S. Hwy. 62 through Avoca being sent to various officials, the Avoca Town Council was informed that a new study by the Arkansas Highway Commission safety team would be made.

Representatives of the Volunteer Ambulance Service (VAS) of Northeast Benton County presented a proposed 1985 budget to the Quorum Court's Community Relations Committee Wednesday night but the committee delayed any action until after the QC Finance Committee has completed its budget hearings next month. VAS board chairman Jim Campbell told the committee that VAS has petitions requesting the Quorum Court by ordinance to establish a subordinate service district to provide tax funds for operations -- estimated at $21,000.

Turkey Shoot winners were Sammy Spivey and his son, Jeff, who made the highest scores, perfect, at the Daisy Air Rifle Turkey Shoot at the Pea Ridge Fall Festival Saturday.

The three candidates for mayor of Pea Ridge were to field questions from a panel moderated by Pea Ridge businessman Bob Harp. The forum was organized by members of Beta Alpha Sorority. Mayor candidates were former Pea Ridge School Board president Jackie Crabtree, alderman Joe Hart and former policeman Duane Oliver. Members of the panel were Mary Lou Beisner, Billie Jines, Pat Orrick and Pam Bolerjack.

Gary Graves of Asher, Okla., took over as the new pastor of the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Pea Ridge.

Pea Ridge High School senior Aimee Winn was crowned homecoming queen Friday night just before the Blackhawks hosted Cedarville. Aimee is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dickie Winn of Pea Ridge. Seventh-grader Morgan Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Miller, was crowned princess. The 12th-grade float was judged best in the parade.

In a busy meeting Monday night, the Pea Ridge School Board gave teachers a $1,000 boost in pay, secured a new venue for high school graduation, welcomed a new board member, heard a proposition from developers to sell some district land, authorized $1.5 million in new financing and authorized superintendent Mike Van Dyke to advertise for bids to raze the old high school.

The Regional Chamber of Commerce serving Northwest Arkansas and Southwest Missouri planned to host its first monthly Business to Business After-Hours on Nov. 17.

The Pea Ridge City Council regretfully accepted the pending resignation of Darrel Van Roekel, city building official, effective Jan. 18. Van Roekle works with the Planning Commission and developers planning subdivisions in the city.

Derry and Sharon Camp celebrated the end of an era and the beginning of a new one Thursday night with a potluck fish fry for all their friends and "auction family" in the old auction house on Arkansas Hwy. 72 east of Pea Ridge. After 22 years in the old building, the Camps will begin holding their Thursday night D&S Auction in a new building this week. The new auction house is northeast of the old auction house.

Pea Ridge National Military Park was the recipient of a $25,000 2004 Unliever National Parks Discretionary Grant dedicated to restore the Leetown Battlefield to its historic footprint. The majority of the grant will be used to supply historically-accurate worn rail fencing around the battlefields.
