Miss Mary Mayer, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. F.C. MacTaggart was crowned as Blackhawks Homecoming Queen Friday night in pre-game ceremonies.

A Pea Ridge businessman, Bob Whitmer of the Pea Ridge Hardware and Building Supply, was hospitalized Thursday after being injured in a fall of about 12 feet from a semi-trailer truck of lumber he was helping unload. Whitmer was taken by Sisco Ambulance Service to Rogers Memorial Hospital where he was treated for a fractured wrist, contusions, lacerations and bruises.

There was discussion about the possibility of establishing a Church of the Nazarene in Pea Ridge. A prayer meeting is set for Oct. 9 and the matter will come under further discussion at the meeting.

Homecoming for the Pea Ridge Blackhawks Friday ended in far less than the gala note with which it had been heralded. One of the players had his nose bloodied when he was allegedly hit in the face by the coach, the coach was asked to resign his post, many of the other players announced intentions to quit the squad, the grandfather of the player who had been struck was threatening action against the coach, and the coach's children watched as four car loads of youths destroyed the youngsters' toys outside their home.

Plans for the first Pea Ridge Fall Festival included a number of exhibits, including some 1985 automobiles, boats, farm equipment and some special events to make the day enjoyable for all attending. The merchants committee sponsoring the day announced that Daisy will bring an air rifle shoot to the affair and prizes will be won with proceeds going to the Beta Alpha Sorority.

Seligman's water leakage has been cut from 800,000 gallons in June to 161, 314 in September. The huge cut resulted from continuing replacement and repair of aged water lines and careful monitoring.

The Gateway City Counsel unanimously passed a resolution renewing its five-mill tax.

The Pea Ridge High School FFA elected officers: Michael Williams, president; Grant Hardin, vice president; Leith Nichol, secretary; Margaret Gonce, treasurer; Sherri Brey, reporter; Brian Dean, sentinel; Ricky David, junior advisor; and Christie Conklin, alternate.

Pea Ridge School superintendent Marvin Higginbottom said that Elementary School principal Mike Mason would become principal of the Middle School effective with the beginning of the second semester.

Beta Alpha Sorority will sponsor a Pea Ridge mayoral candidate forum at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, at the Pea Ridge School cafeteria, said sorority member Beverly Morrison. Mrs. Morrison said that all candidates, Jackie Crabtree, Joe Hart and Duane Oliver, have agreed to participate. She said that the forum will likely last two hours.

Thanks to Pea Ridge area and other sponsors and the hard work of 19 bicycle riders, $1,703 was raised for the St. Jude Children's Hospital. The bike-a-thon was sponsored by the Battlefield 4-H Club. Riders completed laps on the grounds to collect pledges they had received.

With the official count close to 2,500 attending, the 16th annual Pea Ridge Mule Jump Saturday drew more mules, 50-60, and more championship contenders, eight, than in recent years. Overflowing bleachers full of jumping mule fans saw more action than usual as 41 mules competed in the Over 51-inch Halter Class and 26 mules competed on the Over-51 inch Mule Jump.

The Garfield City Council at its meeting Oct. 5 extended Mayor Bobby Flickinger's buying power to $20,000 to take care of water repairs and improvements. The city's top priorities are to complete the Two-Ton water loop and upgrade the size of lines to customers on Wimpy Jones Road.

Pea Ridge 2003 Homecoming Queen Kelli Keene crowned Kala Guess as 2004 Homecoming Queen in Pea Ridge High School Gymnasium Friday afternoon. Guess is a senior and the daughter of Marvin and Melissa Guess.
