Hendrix College winning with Winn

Dayton Winn, 2013 Pea Ridge High School graduate and former 4A-All-State football player, has led the continuing resurgence of the revived Hendrix College football program as it moved to 3-0 on the year with a 48-31 conquest of Birmingham Southern last weekend.

Winn racked up a career high four touchdown runs as he rushed for 121 yards to lead the Warriors over BSU. He scored twice and rushed for 147 yards in their season opener, a 47-28 victory over Westminster (Mo.) College. The next week the Warriors beat Bacone (Okla.) College 24-14 with Winn scoring once while rushing for 141 yards.

In the Birmingham Southern game, Winn scored the game's first TD, a 20-yard jaunt to put Hendrix ahead 7-0. After BSU tied the score, Winn cut loose on a 55-yard scamper to regain the lead at 14-7. When the Alabama boys tied the score once more, Winn scored on an 8-yard run to give Hendrix a 21-14 lead, a lead they would never relinquish.

No stranger to football honors, Winn was chosen to the First Team Offense in the Southern Athletic Association, the league the Warriors are members of. Winn was also selected the 2013 SAA Newcomer of the Year and was also honored at the Little Rock Touchdown Club's Team Player of the Year last year.

It is not as Hendrix hasn't started 3-0 before, only the last time that happened was in 1929. With a nearly all-freshman team suiting up last year, with few upperclassmen, the future is really bright for the NCAA Division III Warriors. One of the upperclass teammates is Casey Caton, son of Pea Ridge coach Lafe Caton. The young Caton led Hendrix in receiving yards last week with 117.

Hendrix will host Millsaps (Miss.) College this Saturday at 1 p.m. in Conway.
