A Garfield family was wiped out of a home and all household and personal belongings in a fire that destroyed their mobile home about 3 p.m. Sunday. The fire is reported to have started in the vicinity of the furnace and to have spread quickly. Pea Ridge firemen were summoned to the scene but the home was reported to be nearly leveled when the fire truck reached the scene. The mobile home was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Bill McKirch.

Pea Ridge mayor-elect Carl J. "Cotton" Carter received advice from his wife, Bobbie, as the two studied instructions of the assembly of a swing set Carter purchased Friday morning for the local Headstart children. Passing by and noting that the 17 youngsters had nothing but a pile of old tires and one small piece of play equipment in their play yard, he bought the new swing set and went on home to get his wife and tools to help him put it together.
