Library is recipient of contributor's generosity

This past week, we were discussing some books that were donated to the library from The Library of Congress by Congressman Steve Womack's office shortly before we moved into our new location. I realized that I know very little about the Library of Congress and decided to do a little research. The following information was obtained from their website.

"The Library receives some 15,000 items each working day and adds approximately 12,000 items to the collections daily. The majority of the collections are received through the copyright registration process, as the Library is home to the U.S. Copyright Office. Materials are also acquired through gift, purchase, other government agencies (state, local and federal), Cataloging in Publication (a pre-publication arrangement with publishers) and exchange with libraries in the United States and abroad. Items not selected for the collections or other internal purposes are used in the Library's national and international exchange programs. Through these exchanges the Library acquires material that would not be available otherwise. The remaining items are made available to other federal agencies and are then available for donation to educational institutions, public bodies and nonprofit tax-exempt organizations in the United States.

"Approximately half of the Library's book and serial collections are in languages other than English. The collections contain materials in some 470 languages."

You can visit their website at www.loc.gov%20/about/fascinating-facts" www.loc.gov /about/fascinating-facts to learn more about their collections.

Speaking of collections, we are adding to ours daily thanks in large part to the generosity of our patrons. A large number of children's books in near mint condition have been donated over the past couple of months. We currently receive a few magazines each month -- Smithsonian, WebMD, Better Homes & Gardens -- thanks to patrons who subscribed in the library's name. Had a call this past week to ask which magazines we would like from a list the donor could order for us.

This is a great time to visit the library for a few good books -- check-out a few by your favorite author(s), buy a few from our used book selection or pick up some from the free box.

The library will be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 26, and Thursday, Nov. 27, for Thanksgiving. We will reopen on at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1. In case of inclement weather, please call the library to learn if we are open -- 451-8442. If you have books due on a day the library is normally open but is closed due to weather, you will not be charged late fees if books are returned on the next day the library is open. The book drop is always available.

See you at the library!
