Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

A total of 26 were in attendance at the first Sunday School classes of the Church of the Nazarene being started at the Shady Grove Community Building. Representatives of the church expressed their appreciation this week to the ladies of the United Methodist Church here and the Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church for their help in getting the services started.

Two girls are on the Pee Wee football team this year in Pea Ridge. They are Lori Wright who plays linebacker and Cheryl Clark who plays tailback.

On opening day of the deer season (gun), a 12-point buck bagged by Danny Ford of Rogers was brought to The Graphic-Scene office Monday. The deer was taken near Garfield. Ford's hunting companions were his brother, Jackie Ford of Garfield and Wayne Tarber of Rogers. This was Ford's first deer in the four years he has been hunting. It was checked in at Beaver Lake Sport Shop and was the first checked in there.

Another donation to the Pea Ridge Community Library was received during the week when Pea Ridge realtor Golda Calvin presented a $50 contribution to the library from the Rogers Board of Realtors to Mrs. Jane Cooley, secretary of the Pea Ridge Community Library Board.

Alderman Jerry Collins, as anticipated for some weeks, submitted his resignation effective Jan. 1. "I've done this job long enough," he said. The city is accepting applications for the post, Ward 2, Position 2, which lies west of Arkanas Highway 94.

Little Flock City Council, Monday night, adopted an ordinance setting speed limits on the roads and streets within the city. It sets limits of 25 miles per hour on unpaved roads and streets and 35 m.p.h. on paved streets. The ordinance provides for fines of $1 per mile per hour over the speed limit for the first 19 miles over that limit and $2 per hour for miles per hour over 20 m.p.h.

NEBCO Fire Department responded to a chimney fire in the Carl Patton rental house and extinguished it. Responding were Don Cypert, Ken Ford, Mike Henry Rob Taylor, Rod Snyder and Lee and Sandy Hennagan.

A new Pea Ridge mayor and four new aldermen will be sworn into office next January, following the results of the Nov. 8 election. The Pea Ridge and Garfield areas will also be represented by a new justice of the peace. The new mayor will be Jackie Crabtree, longtime Pea Ridge resident and former president of the Pea Ridge School Board.

The Pea Ridge School Board will host a community meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22, in the school cafeteria for a discussion on discipline problems in grades six through 12. High School and Middle School principal Jerry Endsley said that discipline problems are so bad that they are affecting test scores. He said that he has brought to the attention of the board the names of 63 students who are the focus of the problem.

Elementary physical education teacher Andrea Ricketts; Kami Holley, last year's PTO president; Starla Billington, 1996 PTO president; and Pea Ridge Elementary School principal David Holmes broke ground Monday to begin construction on an elementary school mini-gym at the east end of the elementary school addition. PTO has been raising money since 1996 to build the mini-gym. Jennifer Wood, PTO secretary, said they hope to have a ribbon cutting at next year's Back-To-School picnic.

Four veterans received Pea Ridge High School diplomas at the Veterans Day Ceremony held at the high school Thursday. The Arkansas Legislature passed a law in its last session that allowed the awarding of diplomas to veterans who had quit high school to serve in either World War II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War. Receiving PRHS diplomas Thursday were Ben Neal Williams, Charles A. Wallace, Johnny C. Danner and Dennis Ray Cable.
