The Pea Ridge 4-H Club produced both Benton County champions at the annual Benton County4-H Achievement Banquet held in Bentonville. Fritz Steiger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Steiger of Rt. 4, Bentonville, was selected as 4-H County Champion Boy, and Sherry Barnett of Gateway was named 4-H County Champion Girl.

Carl (Cotton) Carter was the newly elected mayor of Pea Ridge, defeating his opponent Edgar David by a margin of 91 votes.

Former Mayor Coen Ross of Garfield was honored by the mayor, City Council and citizens when he was presented with a plaque of appreciation for his 13 years as Garfield's mayor. Ross had resigned because of failing health.

About seven inches of rain fell on Pea Ridge during a 48-hour period, according to Pea Ridge weather observer Frank Price. The natural drainage ditches did not hold at all. The spot that created a bottleneck was the one-lane bridge on Davis Street near the community storm cellar.

Water-Street superintendent Charles Hardy said that the city had received $8,245 from the Federal Disaster Relief Fund to reimburse the city for damage done to the local sewer and water systems and streets during floods earlier in the year.

Voters in northeast Benton County are turning out in record numbers for the general election. In one polling place, there's fear that there won't be enough ballots. In another, in southern Missouri, a national exit polls being taken. All polling places in this area report the heaviest turnout of voters in memory.

Each year at the final football game, seniors who are members of the Blackhawk Band are honored. On Oct. 26 one senior, Bob Jones, received a carnation from Lynette Fuller as band director Richard Daye watched.

The Pea Ridge Blackhawks have a new fight song and it will be performed for the first time tonight at the Blackhawk bonfire at 6:30 p.m. at the football field, said band director David Dickey.

A Pea Ridge area woman has joined Woodmen of the World as a field representative. Shirley Cope said that she joined the company because of her family's long experience with it. "I had insurance with them, my great-grandfather had insurance with them and my great-uncle had insurance with them. I just thought they were a good company."

The Pea Ridge Blackhawks won their seventh District 1A title in eight years Friday night beating Greenland 38-18. Pea Ridge ended the regular season 6-4 with all four losses to 2A teams.

At its meeting Monday night, the Pea Ridge School Board loosened its purse strings, voting to pay a portion of the cost for the sixth-grade field trip to the Ozark National Science Center in March. Pea Ridge sixth-graders have taken the trip for the last seven years. Until two years ago, the school district and a donation from the local Arvest Bank paid for the trip.

Taking a limousine ride to Blackhawk Grill Thursday were the top sellers in the PTO's fall fundraiser, Cole Wright, first; Avery Dayberry, second; Nicole Henson, third; Paige McGaughy, fourth; Angel Ford, fifth; and Megan Turner, sixth. All children are kindergarten students except Nicole Henson who is in the first grade.
