Teachers given waivers

School teachers will still owe six days on their contracts after students leave school. The quandary arose as a result of the six days allowed as a waiver from the State Board of Education for missed days of school due to snow.

"We have a very unique situation," Rick Neal, school superintendent, said.

After extended discussions, including discussions the previous month, School Board members approved a resolution providing a "waiver" allowing teachers to use sick and personal days for days after students' dismissal.

Initially, board member Josh Ramsey questioned using "sick days" because he believed it sent the wrong message and allowed abuse of the policy.

"I think policies were meant to be deviated from when not put in place to address this," Ann Cato, board president, said. "I don't think our policies are meant to be so black and white."

Neal explained that some employees on extended contracts will also face issues of making up their contractual obligations.

"It's a waiver on the policy, just like the state gave the school for the students," Jacqueline Brownell, assistant director of the Pea Ridge Manufacturing and Business Academy, said. "In essence, that's all we're asking for here tonight -- a waiver."

"I like that," Ramsey said. "Integrity and ethics are not compromised."

The board unanimously approved the resolution.
