Summer food program feeds children for free

With summer right around the corner, it's time to think about keeping children healthy while school is out. Pea Ridge School District provides free meals to children during the summer.

Beginning Monday, June 9, lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday through Friday, at Pea Ridge Primary School. There are no income requirements or registration. Any child under age 18 may come to eat. The program will continue through Friday, July 25.

For information, contact Keith Martin at 451-8183 or [email protected].

Pea Ridge School District will also provide transportation from scheduled pick-up and drop-off locations, including Givens Place, Standing Oaks, Maple Glen, Summit Meadows, Windmill Estates and Battlefield View subdivisions. There will be a scheduled location at the corner of North Davis Street and Lee Town Road.

More than 45 percent of children in Pea Ridge School District receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year, but many of these children do not get enough to eat when school is out. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) ensures that low-income children continue to grow and learn during the summer. Each year the U.S. Department of Agriculture partners with local organizations like Pea Ridge School District to provide free meals to children when school is out for the summer.
