Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

Jimmy R. Woods, son of Raymond Woods of Pea Ridge, was award the highest honor given by American Airlines, the Distinguished Service Award for Valor for his actions following a fire and explosion in a computer rectifier at the Sabre II installation in Tulsa.

A 65-pound flathead was caught by Roscoe Reed of Pea Ridge and Fred Todd on Grand Lake in Grove, Okla. The catfish measured 46 inches long and produced about 30 pounds of edible fish.

Wood-Hall Post 8109, VFW, installed new officers including Freddie Napier, commander; Jerry Clanton, senior vice commander; Al McKnight, junior vice commander; Bill Dickson, quartermaster; Charles Phillips, advocate; Johnny Richards, chaplain; Jack Gaines, adjutant; Floyd Walker, surgeon; Billy Sisco, service officer; and Wayne Ellington, trustee.

Pea Ridge Country Times

Collection began on a one-cent sales tax approved by the voters of Pea Ridge. The tax revenue was to be used for city services.

The Collegians of Bethany Nazarene College in Bethany, Okla., appeared at the Pea Ridge Church of the Nazarene for a concert for the congregation.

The plans for a new elementary school building were approved and the construction was suppose to take eight weeks. The 150-foot by 90-foot building was set to include a new cafetorium, five new elementary classrooms, bathrooms, storage and a new kitchen. The present cafeteria and kitchen would be adapted to new classrooms and other uses.

The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Three hundred people attended the Ministerial Alliance's first baccalaureate service. This was the first baccalaureate since 1990 and the first one sponsored by the Ministerial Alliance.

John Knox, chief of resource management at the National Military Park, and intern Melissa Nichols, began replacing a quarter-mile of split rail fence near the visitor's center. The project involved the placement of more than 800 cedar rails, each 10 feet long.

The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Lillian Dueker and Lucille Brown both celebrated their 103rd birthday at a party at the Oak Ridge Retirement Community. More than 160 people attended the party which included a clown, balloons, door prizes, live music and performances by the Ridge Rockers Square Dance Club. The party also served as a groundbreaking for the new pavilion at the community.

Valerie McKeever, second grade student at Pea Ridge Elementary school, won first place in the essay contest sponsored by All Pets Animal Hospital in Bentonville in honor of National Pet Week. McKeever's essay was about how she believes her dog helped her with her asthma. She received $25 for her first place award.

Diana C. Morris was named to the President's List for the spring semester at Central Baptist College in Conway, Ark. Diana is the daughter of Dr. Ronald and Joanne Morris of Pea Ridge, a 2001 graduate of Pea Ridge High School and a member of Old Missouri Road Baptist Church in Springdale, where her father served as pastor.
