Summer reading programs to begin

Cinda Wooldridge and I attended the Parent Fair at the Primary School on Thursday evening, May 1. We loved meeting all the new people and seeing a lot of familiar faces. We even managed to buy some books at their book sale! We tried to spread the word about the library and our Summer Story Hour and Summer Reading Program. We were in the same hallway with the Shiloh Museum and the Museum of Native American History and they attracted a lot of attention with their displays. Thanks again to the Primary School for inviting us.

We sure had beautiful weather for the city-wide garage sale. I ventured out both days and got some good bargains. We had some like-new paperback Westerns donated to the library. I know our readers of Western fiction will be happy.

Saturday, a hardworking group of Lions Club members showed up at the library with a truck load of mulch and several Nandina bushes. Their landscaping efforts are greatly appreciated. The bushes look great and, from what I have read on the internet, they are easy to maintain. Thank you to all the people who gave up their Saturday to improve the looks of the library. The members of the Library Board and I are very grateful.

Last week, our parking area was striped and the handicap parking space clearly marked. Our outside lightening was recently improved and soon we will replace the library sign with one that will be easier to read.

We are working toward having the first Summer Story Hour from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 14. It is open to children of all ages. You can sign up for this program starting now. The Summer Reading Program will run July 7-24; sign up starts July 7. This program is open to children from kindergarten through fifth grade. Participants must read on their grade level or above. Stop by the library for more information.

The Optimist Club will be the featured group for display shelves this month. Optimist Clubs are dedicated to "Bringing Out the Best in Kids" and do their part through community service programs. This group donated money to our library that allowed us to purchase books, four book display carts, and the colorful rug in the children's area. They award scholarships to high school seniors; and are also responsible for all the American flags that you see around town on National Holidays. Stop in and read their creed and you may find you would like to join this group.

Remember you can follow us on Facebook for the latest library happenings.

See you at the library!
