Lady 'Hawks christen new track with championship

Mikhaela Cochrane's dominance of the field events sparked the Lady Blackhawks to an overwhelming victory in the first ever high school track and field meet held on the Pea Ridge campus.

Pea Ridge's girls rolled up 243 points to far outdistance runner-up Gentry who finished with 94. Gravette was third with 69, Decatur took fourth with 50, followed by Prairie Grove with 44. Farmington was a surprisingly easy victor in the boys division, accumulating 167 points, well ahead of second-place Prairie Grove who finished with 97. Gentry was third with 96, Gravette fourth at 90, with Pea Ridge coming in with 81 and Decatur 24.

Cochrane's unusual quadruple victories saw her best the field in two throwing events as well as two jumping events. She earned her blues in the discus (100-0), shot put (29-4), long jump (14-10), and high jump (4-7) events. Together with her third and fourth place finishes in the 300 (56.3) and 100 meter hurdles (19.97), Cochran piled up 51 points to lead all scorers, easily the highest point total achieved by a Pea Ridge track athlete in many seasons.

Emma Pitts proved to be the top athlete on the track with victories in all three sprints. She won the 100 (13.64), the 200 (28.81) and 400 (1:08.76) while also running a leg on the winning 4 by 100 relay team (56.71). Pitts rounded out her scoring by taking a third place in the discus and a fifth in the high jump to tally 42.5 points, second most in the meet behind teammate Cochran. Pitts' and Cochran's individual points together were only a half point behind the total of team runner-up Prairie Grove.

Mondy was second in both the 100 (13.83) and 200 (29.9), and finished third in both the triple (29-3) and long jumps (13-7). She ran a leg on the first place 4 by 100 team, along with Pits, Gloria Vargas and Savannah Cypert for the remainder of her points.
