Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

The Pea Ridge school board met to discuss important topics including sewer connections to the new gym, a new roof for the gym, re-hiring of J.D. Ramsey as elementary school principal and gave a report of the school district that said they were up by $71,705.

The construction of the Babe Ruth field on Weston Street started and was hoped to be ready for the coming season. The field was to have lights so games could be played at night. The Little League field was said to start construction in fall and be ready for the next year's season.

Pea Ridge Country Times

Former City Marshal Loyd Pifer appealed his dismissal and the Pea Ridge Council rejected his appeal. Pifer was dismissed after leaving for vacation without notifying the mayor and the council. Pifer said the dismissal was without sufficient cause because after 11 years of service with few vacations and general service was beyond the call of duty.

Tony Fletcher Jr. won the election for a five-year term on the Board of Directors. 265 people voted for the 62 mill school tax.

Susan M. Wenzel and Deborah A. Wilson, both of Pea Ridge, were injured when their car hit a gate post on Ark. Hwy. 72 during a rainstorm.

Micah Looney was awarded a first place for his sculpture and an honorable mention for his mixed media drawing in the Northwest Arkansas Art Competition. Wendy Wilkerson and John King received honorable mentions in their categories.

The Pea Ridge area measured 23 inches of snow on March 9.

Frank Navarro, a retired Southern Baptist minister, was working to organize a Children's Church at the Weston Street Chapel in Pea Ridge. The church's goal was to do the same things as in real church but with the use of puppets and costumes to make it fun for the children.

The Pea Ridge Fire Department moved into the new building and officials reported that since the moving process started, they have had 23 fire calls.

Nathan Musteen was the Senior Blackhawk of the week. Musteen, 18, the son of David and Sheila Musteen, said he planned to attend the University of Arkansas and study forestry and park management. He eventually wanted to become a park ranger.

U.S. Rep. John Boozman met with citizens at a constituent forum in Garfield. The main point of discussion was drug importation from Canada.

Pea Ridge School District officials began planning for the campaign to pass the 5-mill tax increase for a new junior high school.

The Garfield City Council supported Mayor Bobby Flickinger and how he handled the Two-Ton transmission-line water expansion project. Pea Ridge water and sewer superintendent, Robert Button, had replaced all but six meters in Garfield, after Garfield water superintendent, John Raines resigned because of the dispute with the mayor over inspection.

Thurman "Gene" Pennel, of Garfield won $50,000 in Missouri Lottery's Club Keno game at Vikings USA Bootheel in Seligman, Mo.
