Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Newman of Garfield celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary at a surprise party hosted by Avoca Christian Church where he has pastored for 21 years.

Miss Diana Haddock and Mr. Charlie Newman were married June 20, 1969, in Mill Creek Baptist Church, Noel, Mo., by pastor Bill Barton.

The couple has two children: Eric Newman of Little Rock and Shelia Wilkerson of Pea Ridge; and seven grandchildren: Knikki Smith of Rogers, Triston Newman of Branson, Anthony Newman and Starlia Newman, both of Lowell, and Tori Wilkerson, Alex Wilkerson and Sammy Wilkerson, all of Pea Ridge.

Mrs. Newman works at Kids for the Future Inc., in Rogers.

The two were voted the couple most likely to be married by the school yearbook staff. By their families and friends who knew them then, the most likely to fail. Both say that moving to Arkansas in 1974 and being saved in 1977 changed their lives.

"By the grace of God we have made it 45 years and will continue to be together for however many more years the Lord grants us until 'death do us part,'" he said.
