A community event was held Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of the new Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market store No. 6971, scheduled to open on July 16.

Store manager Scott McMillan said the "Community Event" was free and open to the public.

"It was a success!" McMillan said. "We had lots of folks from the community come out and visit with the associates! We really enjoyed getting to meet more members of the Pea Ridge community. We look forward to serving all of the great folks in Pea Ridge."

Food and fun seemed to be the themes of the day as employees served hot dogs from the grill while younger children played games in the "duck pond," a small wading pool filled with rubber ducks.

A basketball toss was also set up and many older children enjoyed the opportunity to have some friendly competitions. As a centerpiece to the event, the Wal-Mart Museum provided Sam Walton's old Ford pickup, complete with his dog kennel in back, which is normally on curbside display at the museum on the Bentonville town square.

The Pea Ridge Fire and Police Departments were on site along with Pea Ridge Mayor Jackie Crabtree to welcome the new store to the community.
