Great reading contests for children this summer

Hope everyone had a good holiday weekend. There were so many activities from which to choose.

By the time you read this, the Summer Reading Program will be in full swing. It is not too late to bring the children to the library, get registered and check out some books. Complete details about this fun program are at the library.

In addition to our Summer Reading Program -- Fizz, Boom, Read, The Subway Restaurant in Pea Ridge is participating in its own Summer Reading Program -- Dig into Reading -- by giving out Reading Progress Tracker Cards. These cards are available at the library. Each time a child reads a book, the librarian will sign off on the card. When the child has read 10 books and the librarian has signed off for each book, the child can take the card to the local Subway and receive a free Subway Fresh Fit for Kids meal. This program runs June 30 through Aug. 31. Each card will be kept at the library until 10 books have been read. Thanks, Subway, for this promotion.

The Water Department employees have begun renovation on the former Collier Drug Store building. We are looking forward to having them for neighbors. The library is the proud recipient of some chairs and shelving from the drug store.

In addition to the tutoring classes being held by The Literacy Council, other tutoring classes will be held in the library this summer. It seems that our "Quiet Room" is getting a lot of use.

Some home school books were donated to the library this past week and we hope to soon have them available for check-out. The donor had visited the library some time back seeking home school materials. When he wasn't able to obtain them at our library, he purchased those items, and after using them donated them to us.

When you visit the library, please take a look at the display for the month of July. We are featuring books about our country, Space Exploration, and, of course, books the children may want to check out for the reading programs.

Several new paperback romance books have been donated for those of you who are looking to do a little light reading. For readers who prefer some non-fiction "Unbroken," by Laura Hillenbrand, an Olympic runner's story of survival as a prisoner of the Japanese in World War II is very popular now as is "Lone Survivor," by Marcus Luttrell with Patrick Robinson. The only survivor of a Navy SEALS operation in northern Afghanistan describes the battle and his escape. First published in 2007, the basis for the movie, "Heaven is for Real" is popular now that the movie is out. Stop by and see what we have to offer.

See you at the library!
