Slick surprise Saturday

From Staff Reports

Area residents were surprised by slick roads Saturday morning after a day of clear skies following more than a week of roads covered with snow and ice. State Police Sgt. Marty Pollock said he had worked numerous accidents Saturday.

At 8:56 a.m. Saturday, State Police were dispatched to a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 62 about a half mile east of Gateway. According to the report, Chinacat Palacios, 18, of Garfield, was westbound on U.S. 62 when she drove onto "black ice" and lost control of her vehicle. Her vehicle crossed the center line and struck a Toyota pickup truck driven by Vicky D. Wilson, 56, of Springdale, who was eastbound. Palacios was taken to Mercy Medical Center by Northeast Benton County Fire/EMS.

State Police worked 10 accidents in Benton County Saturday, according to State Police officials.

Benton County Sheriff's Office worked three accidents Saturday, according to Keshia Guyll, BCSO public information officer, but accident reports were unavailable by press time. One of the accidents was a head-on collission on Radar Road at 9:32 a.m.

Nathan See, Pea Ridge Street Department superintendent, said low-lying and shaded areas were slick.

"It cleared up so fast, there was nothing we could do about it," See said, explaining that rising temperatures and sunshine quickly melted the frozen spots.
